It was originally called a “watch cap” and used by sailors keeping watch through the night to keep them warm as the temperature dropped as the wind crossed the water underneath their gaze. They kept lookout from the top rail of the lighthouse following the beam as it scanned the horizon across the water. They kept watch for threats of other ships or ice bergs or just the chance to holler “land-ho” advising their crew mates of what to expect. Today, we call it a beanie, but it still keeps your noggin warm as you wander the waterfront or warm up on the way back into the marina after a long day on the boat.
